MAKE UP FOR EVER opens its Flagship Boutique in SM Megamall

Seems like SM Megamall is on a roll! I've attended 3 events/openings so far, and this new Fashion Hall wing is proving to be a hub of all things related to beauty and fashion. The most recent event I've been to was from MAKE UP FOR EVER where they launched their first flagship store in the Philippines.

If you recall, MAKE UP FOR EVER pulled out from the Philippines a few years back much to the dismay of its fans and loyal makeup artists. If there was one product that I loved from the brand, it was the White Definition Foundation with SPF 30 PA++. I even considered purchasing from Sephora in Singapore, but when I heard about the opening we gladly trooped to Megamall and purchased our long overdue refills. If I remember correctly, the refill was Php 2,700. I've been told by the SA that there have been some price adjustments on the products, but I can't accurately remember how much.

Anyway, here's what went down at the opening two weeks ago:

Robbing the cradle: My fave baby products

I just had a 2-hour dental procedure (removal of my impacted tooth) earlier today. According to Dra. Tan-Carpio, unlike her other patients I was very enthusiastic about the surgery and was willing to even look in mirror periodically to check the progress. She explained that my impacted tooth was under another molar, and its roots were fused to my jaw. I remember her asking me, "Do you want to see?" At first I hesitated, and then asked, "Is it bloody?" To which she replied, "No, there's no blood." I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Game, I want to see!"

So she handed me a mirror and I peeked. And all I was thinking about the the whole time while looking at my teeth was, "Wow, this is pretty neat!" Okay, I am thisclose to explaining how my gums and teeth looked like but I know I have some squeamish readers so I'm holding off on my graphic explanation. This is where I thank my Dad (who is coincidentally a Doctor) that he made me watch all those NGC/Discovery Channel documentaries on the human body while I was growing up. I am ever so curious about everything :P

Anyway, I had braces installed a few weeks prior to surgery so essentially I am back to being a metal mouth. Hopefully my teeth will be perfect by the end of the year (perfect abs can follow, haha). But as with everything, I still have to endure some discomfort, pain, swelling, and bruising which is normal after surgery. So I guess I'm staying home this weekend, le sigh.

Well that was a long introduction. Do you find yourself gravitating towards baby products while shopping? I do! And I think it stems from the notion that baby products are gentler and more tailored for sensitive or intolerant skin. I've accumulated quite a number of baby products which I use on a regular basis, some of these finds are multi-purpose and are more affordable than most "adult" skin care/beauty products.

So here are my picks:

AVON BABY MOISTURIZING LOTION (Php 159/200ml, regular price is Php250)

When Avon phased out my favorite lotion of 10 years, the Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Lotion, I was left sad and wanting. I really liked how lightweight it was and how it soothed my dry skin. Since then, I've been in search of a suitable replacement, preferably something that didn't leave me feeling coated and with very minimal fragrance. Mara, my friend from Avon, suggested I try their Avon Baby Moisturizing Lotion. So I got a few and tried it the moment I got home. It's creamy yet impressively dries fast and matte. When I thought I was over powdery scents, the Avon Baby Moisturizing Lotion proved me wrong -- the fresh powdery scent was addicting and so refreshing. In my opinion, it's the best "powdery" scent out there, as I know there are many versions of this baby scent. Love this to bits, I will probably hoard this next time it goes on sale. FYI, it's still not an exact dupe of the Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Lotion, but hey, it's a pretty good alternative!

I purchased these from Celine Gabriel-Lim as gifts for my inaanaks last Christmas. They loved it and so did the Ninang, haha, so much so that I kept 2 bottles for myself. I really love the baby scent and it's not overpowering at all like other citronella bug sprays, in fact, Kiele is is very light and just perfect for summer. I use it mid-day when I need to perk myself up, because we all know work can be boring by 3:30pm (this is the time I usually fall asleep in my cubicle, haha). My inaanaks tell me that it really helps keep mosquitoes at bay, but I have yet to try or notice its bug-zapping effects on me since I primarily use it as a cologne. Order Kiele through 0917-8362175.

Review: VMV Hypoallergenics Red Better Daily Therapy Moisturizer

Here's someone who I wish would blog more often: my "twin", Kari, of Pretty Owlsome. I love how she writes, as well as her fascination with owls (thus she has sections in her blog called "Owldrobe", "Hoot-Worthy Finds") which I think is pretty darn cute. I mean, who doesn't like owls? Anyway, here's her review on the VMV Hypoallergenics Red Better Daily Therapy Moisturizer which she tested for a couple of months. Read on!

Summer is coming up fast! If you’ve been using those ultra-rich moisturizers and body butters after that cold spell earlier this year, it’s time to switch. Kira gave me the VMV Hypoallergenics Red Better Daily Therapy Moisturizer to review (quite) some time back, hihi, and from my experience with it, it’s something that can definitely find a place in your summer skincare routine.

Ultra-moisturizing inflammation, redness + flaking control. Incredibly rich, soothing and therapeutic yet non-comedogenic and gentle enough for daily use.

Our superb dining experience at Vikings Luxury Buffet in SM Megamall

Vikings are super warriors and are known for their gung-ho attitude, ravenous appetites, and enlarged meals especially during feast nights. For those who wish to celebrate like a viking and indulge in mouthwatering cuisines from around the world, then read on about my experience at the new Vikings branch.

Every Vikings branch has a different theme: SM North EDSA has classy black and white designs, SM Marikina offers homey interiors, SM Lanang has the modern Filipino look, SM MOA is Scandinavian-inspired, while the SM Megamall branch has a very eclectic art museum feel. We usually celebrate birthdays here (view my birthday video at Vikings MOA) because in true Filipino fashion, what better way to create a memorable birthday than with good friends and endless food.

My Dad was in town and celebrated his 64th birthday early this week, so it was just perfect that Vikings Luxury Buffet invited us to dine at their new branch in Megamall.

Considered as the largest buffet restaurant in the country, Vikings offers an impressive selection of Asian, European, American dishes that will surely whet the appetite of the pickiest of eaters.

A little bit of trivia: Vikings Luxury Buffet was nominated and awarded the title “Most Promising Retailer” for 2013! This was the first time that Vikings has received such a prestigious award from the Philippines Retailers Association.
Okay, now on with the tour! Here's what greeted us the moment we stepped in:

Splattered with fun colors, this section really appealed to my senses!

The Philosophy Store: Believe in Miracles

Who has fond memories of Philosophy? I remember back in the day when this popular skin care brand was housed in Beauty Bar, and I would ogle at the lovely children's photos on the labels. I love the clean and clinical feel, the lower case writing, and their no-fuss ingredients list.

I was in Megamall yesterday and saw the new Philosophy store while on the way to Vikings (another blog post on our yummy dinner soon), although I was not looking at purchasing anything, the immaculately clean store with beckoning interiors prompted me to spend a *few* minutes inside to check out Philosophy's new offerings.

Camaïeu: Now open in SM Megamall Fashion Hall

Another French fashion brand finds a new home in the Philippines! Since its creation in 1984, Camaïeu has made its mission to offer women fun, wearable, everyday clothing options that won't break the bank. Camaïeu is currently France's leading fashion retailer and is already available in 20 countries namely - France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Morrocco, Switzerland, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and now the Philippines.

Last week, we were given a quick tour of the new shop in SM Megamall. It was nice to see some of my fashion blogger friends as I haven't been very active in attending events lately. Here's a peek at Camaïeu's very colorful store:

Camaïeu, which means "assorted tones" in English, offers a lot of trendy pieces as well as basics that allows everyone to mix and match clothes effortlessly. I live by the basics -- most of the time you'll see me sport a basic shirt spruced up with colorful, trendy, or delicate jewelry, or partnered with a really brightly patterned skirt.

Camaïeu is excited to present its vibrant Spring/Summer collection which is filled with all the summer must haves that fashionistas would love to be stocking up on this season.

Nestle Temptations of the World: Dutch Speculoos Ice Cream

I remember the first time I had a taste of the famous Cookie Butter spread. A kindred soul just decided to surprise everyone and bring an unopened jar to the office. We huddled around it, broke open the seal and relished in the delicious aroma of this coveted cinnamon spiced cookie spread.

Now on account of trying to be more healthy, I've lessened my sugar intake and totally forgot about Speculoos altogether. Well, up until last week that is when the lovely people over at Nestle informed me that they were so excited to send me some of their Dutch Speculoos Ice Cream tubs. *big smile*

Speculoos-flavored ice cream with generous ribbons of Speculoos spread and cookie chunks. Heaven :D

Natural flush: Ellana Pressed Mineral Blush Duo in Kitten & Peach Passion

Do you remember those days when cheek tints were all the rage? My first blush/cheek tint was from The Body Shop which used to be in a roll-on applicator. Coming from an all-girl Catholic school, we were not allowed to wear "makeup" everyday and so I mostly wore just lip balm and Johnson's pressed powder. Once in while I'd sneak in the little TBS cheek tint for that glow-from-within flush. I thought it was the best thing ever -- it was in a teeny classy glass bottle and was advertised as "made with crushed rose petals". And mind you, I bought that advertising fluff hook, line, and sinker. Eventually they replaced it with the [watered down] cheek tint in a plastic tube with a doe foot applicator. I tell ya, it was much more fun before.

Anyway, the last time I fell in love with a blush was during early 2000 when L'Oreal released their Blush Delice in Pink Marshmallow. We hoarded those because the pink was just right and the shimmer gave us that elusive glow. It's still available now but the shade has changed, it used to be a fresh cotton candy pink with shimmer but now it's a tad darker (yes, we notice little things like this).

I haven't worn blush in a long time (except maybe when I'm forced to, like during events and stuff) and I'm glad that Ellana gave me one of their newest pressed blush duos. I got the lightest called Kitten & Peach Passion:

If you’re looking for cheeks that seem to glow-from-within, then you’ve come tothe right place! Our Blush Duo Compact has an illuminating yet natural finish andcomes in complementing color combinations. Get that beautiful, soft definition injust a few seconds!

Pop of Color: Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red

I just got back from a hearty dinner and my sister and I (we are thisclose and love eating out!) discovered a new Korean place that serves good and affordable Sam Gyup Sal. I took lots of photos and I'm crossing my fingers that I can find some time to write about it :)

Anyway, after my purple/berry streak with Pixi's Bitten Berry I am now back to my usual red lips. I've been wearing a lot of neutrals at the office and I've been relying on my usual eyebrow + red lips combo to perk things up. You can say that I've become such a minimalist now: more streamlined clothing, dainty necklaces,  ballet flats, and a polished face have become my so-called "uniform" every day.

My VMV It Girl (my fave red lipstick) is running low and last time I checked their brand in SM Makati didn't have any stocks, so I'm glad my Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red is here to the rescue.

Packed with lip-loving ingredients, this glossy gel balm protects & hydates lips instantly. After the balm wears off, lips are left tinted with a flattering, personalized hue just for you (colour & intensity depends on pH level of lips). Twist-up crayon requires no sharpening. Secure lid after use.

This just in: New Avon Ultra Color Absolute Lippies, Anew Reversalist & Love Collides Fragrances

Happy International Women's Month! As I was having an early dinner with my Mom and sister pre-"300: Rise of an Empire", I pondered about how blessed we all are with the choices and options that are available to us now. We are free to vote, voice our opinions, free to choose and free to pursue our heart's desires. Back in the day, being single and over 30 (read: my age) would raise a lot of eyebrows and would be a cause for alarm. But now, it's perfectly normal to be single and focus on career first. I'm glad I have very open-minded parents, it's such a relief to be who I choose to be without them getting in the way or imposing their "dreams" on me. I would definitely be the same way with my future kids.

What better way to highlight our month than by featuring THE brand for women -- Avon. Avon has forged excellent relationships with their customers, empowered their Avon ladies and offered them the opportunities to be CEOs of their own business for decades. Avon has also passionately and tirelessly helped increase breast cancer awareness through their Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

That being said, I support Avon wholeheartedly. I do purchase their products and I've been a loyal user of their Moisture Therapy Oatmeal lotion for years, until it was finally phased out last year (*sob*).

Last month, Avon surprised us at an intimate dinner and showed us their newest products. Before the unboxing, here's a photo of Donna, Me, and Mara Ruiz (Avon Web Editor & PR):

Feel and Look Good with Velvet Rose Lingerie

Has this ever happened to you: you're hard-pressed at finding that perfect dress for an important occasion, you finally find it (in your favorite color, no less) and it's way within your budget. You giddily head to the dressing room, try it on, and *poof* the dress fits like a glove -- but -- there are visible bulges here and there, and your undergarments are showing. Ugh.

This is precisely the reason why I stay away from stretchy, body-hugging fabrics such as jersey. If you notice, I prefer to wear A-line dresses or full skirts which cinch at the waist to hide any bulges I might have (yes I am thin but I do have them!). However, sticking to a certain dress style is very limiting and can be boring, so if you want to be able to strut in your best bodycon or body-hugging ensemble, then you've got to invest in the right undergarments.

Enter Velvet Rose Lingerie, a concept store that houses various intimate pieces from underwear, brassiere, hosiery, lingerie, swimwear, sleepwear to bedroom novelty items.

At Velvet Rose Lingerie, we believe that feeling good and looking good starts from the inside that’s why we commit to offering only the highest quality, stylish shapewear and intimate wear backed up with innovative technologies and made with superior fabric and material that feel oh-so-comfy. It’s time you get the right support you need!

Velvet Rose Lingerie's Shape Perfection series beautifully enhances curves, hides bulges, and slims down your figure without compromising comfort. Superior fabric and stay-put seamless technology lets you move freely and with ease.

An Impromtu (and funny!) Late Night Torikatsu V-day Dinner

Valentine’s day just came and left without me noticing.I can’t believe that it’s almost been a year since I was last attached to someone. The feeling is very new to me, but then again, if not for my singledom I would never have accomplished so much in a year! In a way, being single has helped me focus on what I needed to achieve. It’s pretty awesome, actually, and pretty liberating.

How do you get back on the dating game when you’ve been attached for over a decade? It’s a question that’s been bugging me ever since I became single. So far, my dates (if you can call them that) have been okay – very chill and nothing spectacular.

Over plates of golden-fried Torikatsu (of course, bingeing on Vday is totally acceptable and it was the easiest to cook, mind you), I asked my friend (who requested to not be named in this post, haha) who is single and active in the dating scene about her most memorable date. “I would love to learn more about the highs and lows of dating in your 30s.” I said. “Amuse me -- the funnier, the better”.

The Classic Torikatsu is my fave
My friend thinks for a bit and chows down on a mouthful of Torikatsu, then has a light bulb moment and starts to share her funniest dates:

Snoe Hair Heroes Agent Zero Cleansing Serum

One of the products I was so excited to try from the Snoe Glamourbox was the Snoe Hair Heroes Agent Zero Cleansing Serum. Since I've switched to SLS-free shampoos two years ago, my hair and scalp can't tolerate SLS anymore -- as in my scalp literally flakes and itches nonstop.

I've been using Pureology which has been mentioned several times in this blog, it's not exactly affordable but it does the job well plus preserves my hair color. Anyway, I decided to put Snoe Hair Heroes Agent Zero to the test. Ever since it came out I've been wanting to try it but just haven't gone around to actually buying one. Thank god for the Snoe Glamourbox!

Sensitive? Cry no more! Hair Heroes Agent 0 gently and effectively cleans hair using all natural vegetable cleansers that are non-stripping, sulfate-free, and naturally low foaming. This cleansing serum is tear-free, non-drying, free of scent-masking agents and clear of harmful chemicals. It will make hair shiny and manageable.

  • Contains organic and sustainably grown vegan ingredients.
  • No sodium sulfate, DEA, or numbing agents.

  • Two products in one. Use head to toe. May be used for hair, face and body.
  • Safe and gentle. Great for babies, kids, or adults with chemically sensitive skin.

New from Canmake Tokyo: Hyperslim Gel Eyeliner & Quick Easy Eyeliner

At the Canmake Tokyo launch last February, we were introduced to the brand's newest releases which consists of delicious new colors and exciting products for Spring 2014. The ones that immediately caught my attention were the eyeliners.

Quick Easy Eyeliner (Php 390) - a precision felt-tipped liner that stays put, it is smudge-free, waterproof, and sebum-proof

Hyper Slim Gel Eyeliner (Php 450) - a creamy gel-type eyeliner (the thinnest I've seen so far!) that is also waterproof and promises to stay on for hours. The tip is soft so be careful not to nick it when putting the cap back on!

Best of 2013: Makeup

Let me present my favorite products of 2013. These are the products and brands I discovered or was introduced to last year, some I've written about and mentioned several times on this blog while some have yet to be reviewed.

So here are my picks:

This is my mascara of choice. It is waterproof and remains intact for hours, usually other long-wearing mascaras tend to give up on me by 5pm and end up I having these dark smudges at the outer corners of my eyes. The Holika Holika Magic Pole Mascara effectively separates and defines each lash, even reaching the lashes in the inner and outer corners. It doesn't provide lots of volume though, but is easily removed using warm water.

I've sworn my love to the Shu Uemura Hard Formula Eyebrow Pencil a few years back, but when I discovered the Holika Holika Wonder Drawing 24HR Auto Eyebrow at the brand launch last year, I immediately loved the shade selections and how easy it was to apply (plus no need to sharpen!). What's more, the color was just perfect match to my light brown hair. I bought 2 pieces initially, then bought 2 more in Korea. That's how much I love it!
