Roundup: Water-based Moisturizers for Combination-Oily Skin

There's no denying I love beauty oils for the face, but really, in this heat there's no way I can slather oil and just not feel uncomfortable. So as far as facial moisturizers go, I always rely on water-based alternatives. Here are some that I've used and accumulated over the last couple of months. Some I've been using for years (Celeteque Water-based Moisturizer is a favorite) while some I've discovered abroad (hello, Innisfree!).

If you have sensitive and combi/oily skin, I hope you find this quick roundup of my tried and tested water-based moisturizers useful:

1. Celeteque Dermoscience Facial Moisturizer - around Php 150

The most affordable and lightweight water-based moisturizer out there, with its aloe vera, provitamin B5, and glycerin ingredients. I've been using it for years under BB Cream, foundation, sunscreen, etc. For some reason BB cream breaks me out (whether drugstore or high-end brands, results are always the same) so I use this as a "barrier" to protect my skin. It's very, very lightweight and easy to apply (no drag!), plus whatever you apply on top of it just glides smoothly. It's a winner and readily available in Watsons or any supermarket/drugstore. The only caveat: it contains silicones.

2. Sebamed Clear Face Care Gel - around Php 600-700

Sebamed is known to create products that protect the acid mantle of the skin, formulating all to have a pH level of 5.5. I purchased this last year when I was breaking out and honestly found it expensive for the size, I think it was around P600-700 for a small 50ml tube. Specifically formulated for acne-prone skin, its formula is free from oils and emulsifiers and mostly uses aloe vera as a base. Also contains allantoin to alleviate irritations, panthenol to heal skin lesions, and hyaluronic acid to keep skin supple. The pH level of 5.5 is said to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

This feels "heavier" than Celeteque's and is sort of thicker (as far as gel-based moisturizers go) and feels slightly sticky. Great when used one its own, but "balls" up when you top it with liquid or cream makeup. FYI, this does not contain silicones and has a "tightening effect" on the skin as it dries.

Brighten up your days naturally with Burt's Bees Daisy White

There is an unmistakable trend in Asian countries and that is to be as fair as can be. I don't want to use the word "whiten", because you can't really be stark white. Rather, I prefer to use "brighten" which brings to mind a clear, luminous, translucent complexion without compromising the skin tone you are born with.

At the previous Burt's Bees launch, we were introduced to their newest line called Daisy White which aims to brighten our complexion naturally. Each product from the line is infused with Daisy Flower extract which has been scientifically known to inhibit tyrosinase activity resulting to a brighter skin tone.

Apart from Daisy Flower extract, this unique line also contains:

  • Summer Snowflake - helps smoothen skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Tonka Bean Bioferment - helps even out skin tone and increases skin's luminosity
  • Pearl Powder - known as an anti-inflammatory, it improves the overall appearance of the skin
  • Indian Gooseberry - helps promote natural skin tone, and reduces the appearance of hyper-pigmentation
  • Alpine Plant Complex - helps brighten skin tone
  • Multi-Fruit Complex - increases the rate of cell renewal to improve dullness, helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Blog Sale: MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyebrow Pencil

Let me know if any of you are interested in these. Both were impulsive buys and almost brand new :)

I was at a makeup workshop last weekend and on impulse, purchased this eyebrow pencil (you know how crazy I get about eyebrow products) because it looked good on me when the MUA applied it. I tried it on my own the next day and the shade was off -- it turns a tad red on my brows. But the formula is smooth and buttery, it would work well on other skin tones, I'm sure.

Drugstore finds: Snake Brand Prickly Heat Cooling Powder in Cool Pink & Pure Beauty Pomegranate Exfoliating Gel

Currently watching "How do you know" which starts Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd. I'm in a good mood today because hello it's Saturday and I was already able to do a lot of errands already, and yes, Paul Rudd has gorgeous eyes *swoon*

Anyway, here are two of my drugstore finds that I want to share with everyone.

1. Snake Brand Prickly Heat Cooling Powder in Cool Pink

For those of you who find the Active Herbal scent too strong and you prefer a more feminine scent, then this is the best variant for you. Notice that it is now in a plastic container, how sad, since I mainly prefer the tin one (it feels more premium to me). The scent is very sweet, and it still gives that strong cooling feel when the powder comes into contact with perspiration -- a must-have in this dreaded summer heat.

Happy birthday, Pnut!

I always knew I wanted to do something special for Pnut's birthday. And since he's not here with me anymore, I decided to have something more personal to remember him by, and that was through this lovely artwork created by Lai. It's now my profile photo, iPhone wallpaper, Twitter avatar, etc.

A few days before May 23rd, I was getting all emotional again because I remembered Pnut's last few days with us. Once you lose a pet, you never really get over it...I'm glad Komiki and Epsilon are here to keep me company, they help ease the pain a little bit.

Happy, happy birthday, my dear Pnut! I miss you every single day. I hope you're having fun up there in the rainbow bridge :)

And happy birthday also to our dear Chi-Chi and Sparky, my Mom and sister's doggies (sister and brother of Pnut) who are still going strong at 11 years old!

Giveaway: Nanny Rose Gugo & Lawat Shampoo and Conditioner (CLOSED)

I've known Mandy of Nanny Rose since 2011 and she always delights me with her handwritten notes and pretty parcels. Nanny Rose recently released a Gugo & Lawat Conditioner that perfectly complements her already popular Gugo & Lawat Shampoo.

The shampoo contains Gugo, Lawat, Lagundi, and Malunggay extracts that nourish and revitalize hair follicles, plus a bunch of plant oils that moisturize and add shine to hair. My Mom used to apply warm coconut oil and gugo while I was growing up, that sort of explains my thick hair. But I remember how messy and time consuming it was.

If you don't want to go through all that trouble, I'd recommend the Nanny Rose Gugo & Lawat Shampoo which has a refreshing grapefruit and lemongrass scent. It lathers quite wonderfully without the need for SLS or sodium chloride (the latter strips the hair of color, FYI). It's very gentle and leaves hair clean -- did not experience any allergic reactions unlike other hair products.

Positively Ouchless: Grandma Minnie's The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm

If there is one thing that's been on my bedside table since February, it's the VMV Hypoallergenics Grandma Minnie's The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm. I received it years ago as a press gift from VMV Philippines and although I knew it was one of their best-selling products that is always sold out in most stores abroad, I didn't really pay much attention to it until recently.

The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm is part of the baby line of VMV Hypoallergenics, all of which I've tried previously. I'm a fan of the Mommy Coddling Lotion, btw.

One of our most popular products worldwide for babes of all ages. Quickly, ouchlessly soothes and heals cuts, scrapes, wounds, dry cuticles, very dry/eczematous patches of skin, raw insides of nostrils, very chapped lips and more!
Ingredients: Petrolatum, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glyceryl Laurate.
Price: Php 1,050/15g

Now you C it: Vitamin C products from my boudoir

It's been a very busy work week (what's new, right?) but I'm still on a high because I just got my US Visa and we were granted 10 years multiple-entry! Indulge me a little, it's my first time to apply for one :)

Anyway, I am watching "Mean Girls" as of writing and am thoroughly enjoying how chill this weekend is going to be. I can catch up on blogging and spend time with my family. I also got organized today and rounded up my Vitamin C products.

In recent years Vitamin C has undergone mass market popularity, it's been quoted to be included in lotions, body washes, topical solutions, facial masks, cosmetics, etc. The forms of vitamin C that are proven most stable and effective are: ascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, retinyl ascorbate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (source).

Generally, a well-formulated, stable Vitamin C offers a lot of skin benefits such as:

  • promote collagen production
  • improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin
  • protects skin from free radical damage
  • repairs visible signs of again
  • brightens skin tone

Photo Story: Burt's Bees Daisy White Launch

Burt's Bees has been in the country for several years and is only now getting the attention it deserves. From its humble roots in Maine back in the 1980s, Burt's Bees has now become a household name and offers more than 197 earth-friendly, natural products using minimal processing as possible.

Last week, a Burt's Bees Daisy White event was hosted by our very own top beauty blogger, Liz Lanuzo. Le Jardin was the perfect place for the intimate launch with its pristine interiors and lush green decor.

I shall feature the products in a separate post, for now here's quick photo story on the event:

We were greeted with an impromptu photoshoot by the talented pro photographer, Shaira Luna. But first, we had to create our own floral crown. Krissy and Eula (both uber crafty) immediately got to work!

Review: Les Couvent de Minimes Rinse-Off Cleansing Cream

I spotted the Les Couvent de Minimes kiosk in SM Makati last year, and even tried to contact them for Glamourbox but sadly did not receive a reply from them. On a personal note, I've always wanted to try it but never got around to buying it because of the price and the fact that it was relatively unknown in the Philippines..

Not until I read Julia's blog post did I muster up the courage to purchase the Rinse-off Cleaning Cream. Apparently Les Couvent de Minimes is only available in the department store of SM Megamall and SM Makati which are both sooo far from my house. Another thing that finally encouraged me to buy was the 50% sale -- instead of paying Php 799 each, it was down to only Php 399.50 each per 150ml.

Thanks to its soap-free original recipe with three beneficial roses, Rinse-off Cleansing Cream cleanses and removes make-up from the face and lips without drying them out and leaves a feeling of freshness and the delicate scent of rose on the skin. It is a unique non-foaming luscious cream that is perfumed with rose absolute essence. The skin is left clean, soft and delicately scented.

MAC Maleficent Collection

Okay, I do hope that everyone is very excited about the Maleficent movie -- I know I am! I cannot wait! Maleficent and Aurora were my favorite Disney characters growing up. For me, Aurora is the most beautifully drawn Disney Princess, with Maleficent as the most stylish and evil of all the villains. And don't forget the stubborn yet adorable Merryweather :)

(Theme song now playing in my head...)

Anyway, I'm totes excited about the MAC x Maleficent collaboration that's arriving in Manila by June! Remember the last time we went bonkers over a MAC collection? Click here to read all about our MAC Archie's Girls adventure.

Who's as excited as I am???

First look: Nelly De Vuyst skin care products

I've been too tired as of late, so much so that last week I stayed in and slept for the most part of Saturday and Sunday. I was greatly alarmed as this rarely happens, usually I'm out on weekends doing what normal people do -- shop, eat, catch up with friends, watch movies, etc.

Even on weekends, I'm always up and about by 6:30am trying to squeeze in some blogging time before I do errands and attend to Epsilon. I am not a morning person, mind you, but I had to change my waking hours the last 6 months. I had no idea taking care of a puppy was too tiring to say the least, as Epsilon wakes me up very early every morning because he has to do #1 and #2. And once I'm up, I can't go back to sleep and I end up doing some leftover work or chores.

Well, hello there!
Today's spa + facial activity at SkinLux was long overdue, though I wasn't particularly looking forward to waking up early on a Saturday (no surprise there!). But, as it turns out, the spa-cial was exactly what I needed. Some ME time really can help a whole lot -- I am more energized now and well, seem well-rested.

There will be a full-blown blog post on my SkinLux experience soon, but for now let me share with you the sample Nelly De Vuyst products I took home today.

Review: 100% Pure Organic Mint Lip Balm

Komiki, my 6-year old Shih Tzu, loves surprises as much as I do! Last month we received a lovely surprise from Canary Cosmetics, and look at Komiki sniffing trying to get first dibs on its contents. And oh, say hello to Cecil Turle, my Mom's vintage figurine.

Once opened, the cleverly designed gift contained the 100% Pure Organic Mint Lip Balm. Two words that got me excited: organic + mint.

Premium lipbalm that deeply moisturizes and softens lips. USDA-certified organic and 100% natural!
It is 100% natural, 100% vegan, gluten free, cruelty-free, contains no synthetic chemicals, no artificial fragrances, no toxic preservatives.

Price: Php 275/4.25g
Available at:
100% Pure is a green company that manufactures organic and synthetic-free skin care, makeup, and bath & body products. It was one of the brands in my radar when I was exploring all-natural skin care brands a few years ago. Initially based in Oklahoma, it was founded in 2005 by Susie Wang who used to work as a skin care formulator for large cosmetics companies. She learned of toxic chemicals being used in eye cream formulas and other products which accidentally eroded the lab table where she worked. Scary stuff, right? It was then that she decided to create 100% Pure and use only the safest and, essentially, pure ingredients in all of her products.
