Leyende La Dolce Muscovado Sugar Exfoliant

Exfoliation is my passion. I love, love to exfoliate in the shower. I don't do it everyday though, but I do take the time to scrub and massage each and every bit of my face and body then smother myself with moisturizer afterwards.

For the longest time I've been such a fan of St. Ives Microdermabrasion due to its small and gentle scrubs, but I will admit that I was giddy when I first heard of Leyende's all natural version -- the La Dolce Muscovado Sugar Exfoliant with Natural Calamansi Extract.

The 411 on Muscovado

Muscovado sugar is a type of unrefined sugar taken from sugarcane juice. It is richer than brown or white sugars as it contains essential minerals such as phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. It's been said that Miss Universe 1968 Martha Vasconcellos from Brazil attributes her glowing skin to a weekly facial scrub regimen of muscovado sugar soaked in sweet almond oil. who wouldn't want glowing and healthy skin right?

At Leyende, we took this homemade beauty recipe idea and added a Filipino touch: using natural calamansi extract, reminiscent of the time when Filipino women rubbed halves of calamansi on brown spots to brighten and even out the complexion. The result is a simple, easy-to-use, but effective facial exfoliant that’s milder than existing salt-based or polyethylene-based facial scrubs.
Introductory price: Php 250

I got a jar compliments of Leyende's Marketing Manager, Claud Santos (she also gave me a very ingenious box to boot!) I am truly proud of Leyende as they are the only local organic brand in the Philippines whose products are 100% ECOCERT.

Ingredients list: Prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, sugar (muscovado sugar), Helianthus anuus (sunflower) seed oil, citrus nobilis (mandarin orange) Peel oil, citrus madurensis (calamansi) extract), tocopherol (vitamin e), Benzyl alcohol** (*ECOCERT-certified, **ECOCERT-approved)

What I like:

  • made of 100% natural ingredients
  • has a distinct sugary-citrus scent, smells good enough to eat
  • feels grainy at first and then slowly melts as I massage it into my skin
  • sturdy container, comes with an inner lid

What I don't like:

  • it felt too abrasive on my face, I use this on my body instead
  • a little bit hard to pick up and to spread, needs more oil perhaps?
  • it leaked! the oils can seep through the inner lid so always keep this upright and tightly closed at all times

Compared to my ONE Naturales Sugar Scrub, the La Dolce has bigger granules and is harder to spread. In fairness, the ONE Naturales version has other added ingredients (glycerin, sucrose, tocopheryl acetate, etc.) so it's really not a  fair comparison. I think this product is a good start for Leyende but I would suggest some minor improvements, like perhaps smaller and smoother granules plus more natural oils for a smoother application?

Have you tried Leyende's La Dolce? Let me know what you think about it :)
