Go Ballistic! Lush now open in Trinoma

Have you heard of Lush? Or maybe a more appropriate question is, have YOU entered Lush? Admittedly for past few years of Lush's existence in the Philippines, I've steered clear of the Lush stores because of its overly perfumed products. I could literally smell a Lush store from a few feet way -- I mean, who hasn't?

BUT I wasn't ready to throw in the towel just yet as I've been getting mighty curious about their offerings. Their famous Ballistics and fizzy Bath Bombs have received praises from various users, though I found those extremely fragrant and caused me to sneeze every so often. Maybe their skin care line holds more promise.

Surprisingly, their newly opened Trinoma branch (they just opened August 5) wasn't as ridiculously perfumey like the others, and so I happily stepped in and browsed their products for the first time in my entire life.

Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shines SPF 15

I am pretty sure that we all know how important it is to apply SPF everyday. But how many of us actually take the time to consciously apply sunblock to our lips as well? I admit, I seldom choose lip balms with SPF because I don't like the gooey and waxy feel, and really most organic or all-natural lip balms rarely offer good sun protection.

Furthermore, there are only a handful of lipsticks or lip tints that offer ample sun protection. So unless I actually take the time to apply an SPF balm, wait for it sit and then top it off with my favorite lip product, my lips are pretty much exposed to the harmful UV rays.

This was generally the reason why I was itching to have one of Bobbi Brown's Treatment Lip Shines (Php 1,100). I mean, if I could have a good 2-in-1 product that saves time and effort, then I'm all for it. Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shines boasts of several natural ingredients as well as a hefty SPF 15:

"You get the best of both worlds with Treatment Lip Shine SPF 15. It gives you beautiful color and actually improves the condition of your lips. It’s a truly modern formula." - Bobbi Brown

Lightweight, soft shine lipstick that doubles as a rejuvenating moisture treatment. It instantly comforts dry, chapped lips and provides long-term moisturization with natural Cocoa and Shea Butters, Jojoba, Apricot Kernel and Avocado oils. Peptides, along with Vitamin C, stimulate collagen production to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, while SPF15 helps prevent future sun damage.

Wet 'n' Wild is finally in Manila

When I saw the display at SM Makati yesterday, my heart skipped a beat! I have long been reading about Wet 'n' Wild, since I was 14 to be exact, ogling at their cosmetics primarily through YM (Young & Modern) and Seventeen magazine (both US editions).

I was most intrigued about their all-natural line of cosmetics and their tinted moisturizers which have received pretty good reviews on MakeupAlley. Here are some pictures for you guys:

Go Greek!

Last week, it was my good friend Marga's turn to choose where to have lunch. Seeing as it was a Tuesday and she/we could eat anything we want (Marga is usually a pescoveg other days of the week), she conveniently chose Go Greek which recently just opened at Food Choices in Glorietta, Makati. She must have read my mind because I have been craving for beef kebabs and it has been a long time since I ate at my favorite kebab place, Cafe Mediterranean.

The signage itself was very cute, and reminiscent of "Ice Age"

As of writing, I am feeling extremely sad. Last August 16 I discovered that Gigantor's shell cracked as a result of his gregarious climbing around the crabitat. I theorize that he fell (as he always does) but landed maybe on one of the hard playthings or on the other crabs.

An unwelcome crack would greatly compromise the humidity inside the shell. And it wasn't just a teeny crack, it was a huge one. So I was greatly concerned.

True enough, Gigantor has been drinking and bathing in the tank more often than usual trying to fill his shell with cool water, only for the water to evaporate within the hour. Also since he loves to dig a lot, if sand gets into the shell his abdomen will get irritated. I have presented several shells and coaxed him several times praying that he'd decide to leave his old shell and transfer to one of the newer and more sturdy shells...but all my efforts were futile. Gigantor isn't leaving his shell for any reason whatsoever.

The Great Fashion Finds @ Robinsons Midtown

I've blogged about Robinsons Midtown before, stating that it is one of the malls I frequent because it houses all my favorite brands (Dorothy Perkins, Topshop, Beauty Bar, Rustan's and Aldo) and restos with good food (KXP, Gumbo, TOSH just to name a few), plus it's near my sister's office so I can pester her and have lunch with her anytime. I remember going to this place when it was relatively new back in my college days. It's great that the mall decided to add a new wing with all the high street brands.

I'd like to thank Jeff (of and of course, Liz, for inviting me to the blogger event, it's always nice to hangout with good friends. Without further ado, here are some of our favorite finds from our 5 chosen stores:

For the longest time, I think, I've been fascinated with skull prints and skull dresses. And so I wore one of my favorite dresses to the "The Great Fashion Finds" at Robinsons Midtown yesterday, together with fellow bloggers Liz of, Lauren of and Lizz of

My dress was made of super soft and airy chiffon, very appropo because the weather was just crazy hot yesterday. See the feather tassels in front?

Veggie Attempt: Beef Bulgogi + Silken Tofu

Eating more greens is included in my Bucket List and I chose to tackle this first because it would seem the easiest and most interesting. Seriously, I DO NOT LIKE VEGETABLES! I only have some if it's on pizza, in burgers, pasta or as sidings to my steak. What my Mom does is she chops them finely and makes creamed soup for me, or tries to "mask" the taste by putting butter or any sort of dairy ingredient, and then I would unknowingly consume it with gusto.

Otherwise, I just set them aside on my plate and stare at them hoping they'd go away. I am such a difficult daughter (tee-hee). So anyway, the plan is to do it slowly because I don't want to shock my tastebuds, go into relapse and abandon the idea altogether. My Mom doesn't know I created a Bucket List and so I am doing these all on my own.

Since I was having lunch at the nearby mall while Mom was having her weekly massage, I jump-started my veggie aspirations with Beef Bulgogi (only P100/bowl, crazy cheap right?) which is a Korean dish. See the beansprouts? I don't touch those things except if it's for a science experiment (who hasn't grown munggo in a cup of tissue in Grade School?) because they have a certain smell and aftertaste which I do not like.

the challenge: conquer the beansprouts

My pick: Best All-natural Insect Repellent

Now that it's dengue season, it's high time for us to use an insect repellent day in and day out. But I know what you're thinking -- commercial insect repellents sometimes smell nasty and make you feel coated. I should know, I've been applying Off! Lotion to school since I could remember. Plus they contain all those chemicals that I can't even pronounce. Yech.

The next best thing is to go the all-natural route. But then again, some Citronella bug sprays are oily and take forever to absorb (you know who you are). And boy, I do not like having to wait long for my hands to dry before I can go back to typing on my laptop. Anyone else who can relate?

Enter Indigo Baby Shoo Fly Don't Bother Me, an all-natural insect repellent safe for babies and for yummy mommies with sensitive skin. I've met Denise and Monica from our previous AWCP bazaars and I must say, Indigo Baby is the only brand you should trust for all-natural [baby] products that won't irritate you or your baby's sensitive skin.

For those of you tired of that strong citronella smell, this lavender, geranium, eucalyptus & citronella-based insect repellent is heaven in a bottle! Shoo Fly Don't Bother Me will keep those pesky mosquitoes away from you and your loved ones.
Aloe Vera gel, Witch Hazel, Grapeseed oil, distilled water, Lavender, Rose, Geranium, Citronella and Eucalyptus essential oils.

Why bad guys will always get the girls

Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow from "The Curse of the Black Pearl”
“The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what he can’t.” Saavy?

Why are women attracted to bad guys? To be honest, this kind of question is never asked by women–we know why the baddies are so attractive. It is almost always a fanboy who posts a whiney inquiry to the effect that "I’m swell, but can’t get a date because the chicks dig the bad boys. Whyizzat?" An honest answer -- "chicks avoid you because you’re an obnoxious, complaining loser" -- is never appreciated so in hopes that men everywhere may be enlightened, I present the following list of reasons of why women love villains.

1.) Villains have a personality. The charismatic baddie who does wicked deeds yet leaves ladies swooning in his wake is almost always a larger-than-life character with a strong sense of self. Compared to him, our white-hatted hero is bland, bland, bland. Villains don’t spend time trying to find themselves. They know who they are–evil. That kind of self-confidence is more of an aphrodisiac than power and money.

Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”:
“Cancel the kitchen scraps for the lepers and the orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas.”

2.) Villains have high aspirations and pursue them. True, those aspirations usually involve ultimate power and world domination, but it beats eating cold pizza and watching football on the telly, night after night. Villains know what they want out of life–everything–and they pursue those dreams with vigor.

Jason Isaacs as Col. Tavington in “The Patriot”
“You know, it’s ugly business doing one’s duty… but just occasionally it’s a real pleasure.”

My Bucket List

Been reading through former schoolmate Celine's 30 Before 30 Project and it totally inspired me to create my own bucket list. Mine doesn't possess such worldly aspirations as hers, but still it's a list I've been creating in my head (and has been gathering dust) for the past year or so.

So while I am in the mood to remember all those things I wanted to do before, during and after I got into a relationship and when I finally realized that I was living in my late 20s (oh where does the time go?). Here's a quick list of the things I want to do and learn:

1. GO AROUND THE PHILIPPINES. I've realized that I mostly take regional [Asian] trips, and so I decided that it would be nice to visit my motherland first since I can go regional anytime anyway. I've always wanted to see those Tarsiers and the infamous Chocolate Hills. Now's the time to do all those.

photo from Planet Zips
2. LEARN A NEW SPORT OR HOBBY. I've always wanted to try snorkeling and diving, but have been set back by all those "Jaws" movies our parents used to make us watch. Sheesh. I like the beach, don't get me wrong. But actually swimming with fishes in the wide open space that is called the OCEAN kinda freaks me out. I also want to zipline, bungee jump and be a fire dancer most especially. If I get to tick these off my list that would be awesome!

My Bobbi Brown Makeover

Lanie (MUA of Bobbi Brown at Rustan's Shangri-la) texted me last week that the new Treatment Lip Shines have arrived and that I was due for a makeover. I was so lemming the Pink Glisten Lip Shine (review to follow) and I really couldn't wait to get my hands on it and check out the other colors as well. I immediately dragged Cat (my faithful bazaar partner) and Marga(ga) so that I may share the makeover with them and get to try out the Lip Shines for free :D

First up, Marga! She is a 24-year-old PR executive-slash-triathlete who doesn't mess with makeup or skin care but can seriously kick ass (if she were not my friend I'd be scared of her. Kidding!).

Marga has perfect caramel-colored skin. I am envious...

Crab updates: good news & bad news

Hey guys!

I haven't been updating my blog on crab stuff because there were just too many things going on in the crabitat. You have no idea how complicated hermit crabs can be...and I used to think they just possessed primitive minds. Anyway, I am getting ahead of myself.

First up, the good news:

  • Hercules molted on July 31! It's his first ever molt with me and I was so relieved. It took him almost 3 weeks to prepare and during those times he's been burrowing and resurfacing trying to look for the perfect spot. He has a lovely jet black color now, far from the drab gray of last month.
  • Max molted too! It's his 3rd this year. The odd thing is, according to my books she last molted on June 3, and then molted again on July 31. I thought small crabs were supposed to molt every 3-4 months but I guess Max was growing so fast she had to shed her old skin again. Yay!
  • Carmine molted on July 24. Yup, the moment I got back from vacation I discovered that he (checked the gender already last week) had just molted. I was delighted.

And now on to the bad news:

pretty Carmine

Carmine passed away on July 31. I discovered that he was attacked by one of the bigger crabs and one of his legs was injured. The fishy smell attracted the crabs all the more and both PP and Gigantor wanted to either "eat" him in his freshly molted state or at the very least take ownership of his shell.

After discovering his injury I transferred Carmine to one of the ISO tanks to rest. He later on abandoned his shell, submerged himself in the saltwater and died. This happened within 24 hours of his injury. Up to this day, Gigantor is still scouring the crabitat in search of Carmine. I think I may have to deep clean the crabitat to get rid of any crab scents that Carmine may have left.

After that incident I have considered purchasing a more active and aggressive Strawberry crab, as from the start Carmine was just too timid. But I decided I may have to hold off on introducing new friends to my crabs as it might disrupt the natural order of things. I think to survive in my crabitat, you have to have a strong personality or at least be able to take strong personalities.

This is the current hierarchy as I've observed in the tank:

PP  >>  Gigantor  >>  Hercules  >>  Max  >>  2 smaller unnamed crabs

So needless to say, it has been a very sad week for all of us as we all hoped that Carmine would survive with us longer but the other hermit crabs decided otherwise.

Caveman & Yeti: The best shaved ice in this age!

Let's all deviate from the trend of frozen yogurts shall we?

The moment I passed by the shop, I was smitten. That furry adorable creature outside was just beckoning. Who can resist a Yeti that looked like that? It looked like it just jumped out of a doodle page. Even though I was full from lunch, the store was much too intriguing and cute to pass up. Good thing I was on blog duty and I had my trusty camera with me.

The shop is comprised of two main characters:

Caveman & Yeti serves Yeti Shaved Snow which is a sweet, frozen dessert that gets its uniqueness from the smooth and light texture of its flavored ice. Popular in countries abroad like Singapore, Hongkong, Taiwan, and the USA, the dessert now has Pinoy twists and toppings like sweet corn and choco-peanut. You can enjoy its many variations - especially the flavors of the season - with filling mochi buns.

Choose from their flavored shaved snow (Vanilla and Peanut) and then top with your choice of fruits, sweets, cereals, syrup, etc. Think of it as similar to Ice Monster but waaay cooler. You'll see later on that the interiors are just really amazing. This is prolly the closest thing to real snow in the Philippines so I must indulge.

(Kira wonders if she can buy loads of shaved snow and make snow angels...)

Crazy Yeti Menu
They have several bestsellers listed under the Caveman Creations such as the Banana Choco, Strawberry Heart, Choco Nilla, Mais con Yeti, Ube Mungster, Choco Nutty, Choco Nutty and Banana Nut.

My Saizen haul

I had difficulty choosing "practical" stuff to take home with me. Even though all my purchases were technically FREE courtesy of the Php 850 GC, I still wanted to bring home pasalubong for my sister and Mom (yeah, freeloaders. LOL).

First item I picked up:

Pet sheets for P-nut! I thought I was getting something as thin as paper towels -- only to realize when I opened the pack that my Php 85 was well-spent! These sheets are absorbent and are similar to baby diapers but only about a fourth of an inch thick. Must remember to restock when it's Micki's TOTM. This sure beats having to make her wear those darn doggie shorts all the time.

Hangers for my Mom (she's been bugging me about this since last year). Sorry Mom, had to wait for the opportunity to get it for free. LOL.

silicone spatula
And of course I had to squeeze in some sort of baking utensil that she can use when baking cream puffs.

sleep mask, compact mirror with brush, 4-way buffer
These are kikay kit stuffers, I bought the sleep mask for my sister. That compact mirror was supposed to replace my old Goody compact brush that's about 3 years old, Saizen's replica is a tad thicker though. And with my new 4-way buffer, my nails are currently uber shiny :D

Kitty cat stationery with 2 kinds of prints!

And lastly a cute fish soap dish and a mini static brush for cleaning stuff -- just because I'm OC like that :D
